Purpose Over Entertainment (P.O.E.T.) is dedicated to using social media, visual and performing arts to foster holistic conversations regarding those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in the Greater Washington, DC area in an effort to eliminate the stigmas surrounding HIV/AIDS and individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
We do this using social media, visual and performance art, and the testimonies of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS with the belief that the stigmas surrounding the pandemic will decrease and eventually disappear.
Performing as a recurring feature in last month’s Revival Tour, B.Steady is making herself a household name and a viral phenom all in one setting. B is a songstress flimmaker, inventing her own form of popfolksoul music for queer people of color and folks with silenced struggles. B uses vocal layering and simple melodies to tell stories about love, sex and life all to a rhythmic beat. www.besteadwell.com
THE REVIVAL is a salon styled tour of queer artists and allies.
With dynamic performances from poets and musicians alike, THE REVIVAL weaves a salon styled night of artistry, libations and genuine fellowship. Historically, queer collectives have hosted artist ‘salons’ in their homes– because there was nowhere else to go. This effort honors a tradition born out of necessity, and is at once a sanctuary (every leg of the tour takes place in a private home) and a concert.
This month we will be featuring “Mary Bowman”
If there was going to be a successor to Maya Angelou, many have said that it would most definitely be Mary Bowman. Though she has only been performing for 3 years Mary has graced stages from your average local poetry open mic to The 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival: Creativity & Crisis. Becoming a Nationally known poet has not wavered Mary’s ability to offer herself raw and unadulterated, as a young woman living with HIV. Mary has shared stages with International Poet Sonya Renee Taylor, National HIV Activist & Escape artist Daniel Bauer, and HBO Def Poet Patrick Washington. In 2010, after writing poetry for 8 years Mary decided to publish her first collection of poetry titled Lotus. In 2011, Lotus won the National Underground Spoken Word Poetry Award for Book Of The Year. Find out more about Mary at http://www.about.me/marybowman and http://www.about.me/poet2012 as she introduces her very own non profit organizations P.O.E.T (Purpose Over Entertainment) which focuses on the Aids/HIV in the Washington, DC area.
